As the driver moves and turns or brakes, the focus of these cameras will also change to focus on specific locations and display images on the screen accordingly. Lexus authorities say the cameras are designed to be free from rain, water, or any kind of dust.
Since the camera pods are smaller than conventional looking glasses, this camera will be able to capture more visible objects than looking glasses and eliminate wind noise. Although some car manufacturers have criticized the camera, it could reduce aerodynamic dragging. But Lexus didn’t mention anything like that when they talked about marketing their camera mirrors.
Legal barriers
Another well-known carmaker, Audi, took the initiative in September last year to use almost identical technology in their electric sports utility vehicles. The difference between Audi and Lexus is that Audi will place the screen of the image obtained from the camera on the door panel without leaving the screen on the base pillar-like Lexus. Initially, this model of Audi is supposed to be the first to be found in Europe. Under U.S. law, the use of a camera in place of a car’s looking glass is also permitted. However, Audi has claimed that it is in talks with US policymakers to sell cars with cameras instead of looking glass in the United States. However, he did not say anything about the progress of the talks.
Audi or Lexus are not the only ones dealing with this regulation. The concept of using a camera instead of a side mirror or looking glass has been considered before by electric car maker Tesla. But due to laws and regulations, their efforts did not see the light of day. With the modernization and technological advancement of cars, it is hoped that car manufacturers will one day be able to legitimize the use of cameras instead of looking glass side mirrors. But it is not yet clear when that will happen.
